Motorcycle Licence Ireland: AM, A1, A2 & A Guide
The motorcycle route is different from the car route. NDLS lists separate motorcycle categories. AM covers mopeds and light quadricycles; A1 is the lower-powered motorcycle category; A2 covers motorcycles up to the specified 35 kW limit; A is the unrestricted motorcycle category subject to age and progressive-access rules.
- AM minimum age: 16.
- A1 minimum age: 16.
- A2 minimum age: 18.
- A direct access is available from age 24, with progressive access possible earlier where the conditions are met.
Pass the motorcycle theory test
A first motorcycle learner permit requires the motorcycle theory test unless a specific exemption applies to your previous motorcycle learner-permit history. The theory test checks Rules of the Road, hazards, risk perception and safe driving behaviour.
Apply for the learner permit
After the correct theory test, apply for the motorcycle learner permit through NDLS. Make sure the category on the permit matches the motorcycle on which you will train.
Complete Initial Basic Training
RSA states that you must hold the relevant motorcycle learner permit to complete IBT. IBT is the mandatory practical training route for motorcycle learner drivers and should be completed with an approved instructor before riding independently where the law permits.
Prepare for the motorcycle driving test
When eligible, prepare for the category-specific practical test and make sure the motorcycle, insurance, permit and test-day documents satisfy the current RSA requirements.
