IRELAND TEST PREPARATION HUB
Irish driving tests, licences and professional-driver preparation
Start with the exact Irish licence, test or professional-driver step you need. If you are completely new, begin with the driving-licence hub; if you already know your category, go directly to theory, practical driving test, SPSV or CPC guidance.Starting from zero?
If you are not sure which licence, test or professional qualification comes first, begin with the complete Ireland driving-licence guide. It separates car, motorcycle, truck, bus, Driver CPC, Taxi & SPSV and school-transport pathways.
Driver theory test
The driver theory test comes before a first learner permit. RSA lists separate theory-test categories for motorcycles and mopeds, cars/work vehicles/land tractors, heavy commercial vehicles and buses, with additional tests for ADI and CPC.
Learner permit and mandatory training
After passing the relevant theory test, a learner can move to the learner-permit stage. Car learners may then need Essential Driver Training (EDT), while motorcycle learners use Initial Basic Training (IBT). Keep these steps separate from the practical driving test itself.
Practical driving test
The RSA practical test checks safe independent driving and knowledge of the Rules of the Road. Eligibility, documents, vehicle readiness and preparation all matter before test day.
Taxi & SPSV Driver Entry Test
The SPSV Driver Entry Test is a separate NTA licensing test for prospective taxi, hackney and limousine drivers. It contains Industry Knowledge and Area Knowledge modules.
