Essential Driver Training Ireland (EDT): how it fits into learning to drive
EDT is the structured car-driver training programme delivered by an RSA Approved Driving Instructor. It builds practical driving skills between the learner-permit and practical-test stages.EDT is structured training
RSA describes standard EDT as 12 one-hour sessions. Eligible drivers may instead qualify for reduced EDT. The programme covers areas such as vehicle controls, positioning, changing direction, anticipation, sharing the road, speed management and night driving.
Use an Approved Driving Instructor
EDT sessions are delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Learners should confirm that each session counts toward EDT and check their recorded progress through the official MyEDT service.
Practise between sessions
EDT is not designed as twelve isolated appointments. RSA recommends practice and road-safety reading between sessions. Use that time to connect what happened in the car with road rules, signs, observation and hazard awareness.
EDT and the practical driving test
Completing the required EDT is part of practical-test eligibility for affected car learners. It does not replace independent practice or the need to prepare documents and the vehicle for test day.
