Learner Permit Ireland: from theory test to practical test
A learner permit is a stage in the Irish licensing journey, not the final licence. Use official RSA/NDLS services for applications and use TPI to organise the learning around the test stages.Pass the relevant driver theory test first
RSA states that a first learner permit requires the appropriate driver theory test for the category. Start by choosing the correct test category rather than mixing car, motorcycle, truck and bus material.
Know the learner-driving restrictions
Official RSA guidance says learner-permit holders may drive for learning purposes subject to the conditions of the permit. Car learners must display L-plates and follow accompaniment restrictions; learners should check the current rules for their category before driving.
Complete the required training
For car learners, Essential Driver Training is the structured mandatory programme. Motorcycle learners use Initial Basic Training. Professional-driver categories have separate requirements.
Move toward practical-test eligibility
First-time car and motorcycle learner-permit holders have a six-month rule before the practical test, alongside mandatory training requirements. Always use the RSA eligibility checker for the final decision about whether you can sit the test.
