Driving Test Ireland: eligibility, checklist and preparation
Prepare for the Irish practical driving test by separating four things: eligibility, documents, vehicle readiness and safe-driving practice. TPI does not book or conduct RSA tests.Check that you are eligible
RSA eligibility depends on a valid learner permit and the training rules for your category. First-time car and motorcycle permit holders are also subject to the six-month rule; car learners normally complete EDT and motorcycle learners complete IBT before sitting the practical test.
Prepare your documents and vehicle
Do not leave test-day checks until the morning of the appointment. RSA publishes a practical-test checklist covering the learner, required documents, insurance and vehicle condition. A vehicle that does not meet the requirements can prevent the test from going ahead.
Revise the Rules of the Road
The practical test is not only vehicle control. RSA advises candidates to revise the Rules of the Road, use official preparation material, practise across different road and traffic situations and get pre-test advice from an Approved Driving Instructor where appropriate.
Practise broad driving skills, not a memorised route
Your goal is safe, independent driving across the kinds of situations an examiner can present: observation, positioning, junctions, speed choice, progress, hazards, vulnerable road users and vehicle control. TPI does not present unofficial route memorisation as a substitute for safe-driving competence.
