TAXI / HACKNEY / LIMOUSINE RULES
Taxi & SPSV Rules Ireland: Driver Responsibilities Guide
SPSV work sits on top of the ordinary Rules of the Road. A professional SPSV driver must understand both road law and the industry rules that govern licensed taxi, hackney and limousine services.Checked against current official Irish information: 9 September 2026Driver licensing and vehicle licensing are separate
NTA manages the SPSV Driver Entry Test and fees, while An Garda Síochána administers and grants SPSV driver licences. SPSV vehicle licensing is a separate process with its own suitability and inspection requirements.
Know the official SPSV manual subjects
The official manual covers the SPSV industry, driver licensing, choosing and licensing a vehicle, operating an SPSV service, navigation, fares, customer service, business responsibilities, safety and test preparation. Those headings form a strong learning structure for TPI.
Taxi permissions can depend on the licensed county
NTA states that a regular SPSV driver licence allows the holder to drive taxis, hackneys and limousines. When driving a taxi, standing or plying for hire is tied to the county shown on the driver display card.
Customer-facing rules matter as much as the test
The purpose of Industry Knowledge is not merely to pass an exam. It covers regulation and good practice for serving the public. TPI should therefore teach fares, accessibility, safeguarding, customer service and safe professional conduct as practical operating knowledge.
